A clipping mask is a layer that "masks" the contents of the layer below it, locking the space that you can color or draw in on that layer. For example, if you draw an apple and put one layer for the leaf of the apple, and put a clipping mask over that layer, you will only be able to mark in the area that the leaf takes up. It's like a spiffy selection tool.
